Is Lucha Underground Coming Back for Season 5?

While it was sad to see Lucha Underground fizzle, fans should feel blessed that they got four seasons of the most ambitious and wild pro wrestling show to ever grace TV screens. Combining exciting in-ring content with cinematic backstage segments, Lucha Underground not only introduced a new way to present pro wrestling, but also made stars in the Anglophone wrestling world out of Mexican talent like Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix.

But Lucha Underground was meant to last longer than four seasons, as the finale, Ultima Lucha Quatro, ended with some tremendous cliffhangers and reveals. There will likely never be a Lucha Underground Season 5, so let's talk about what should have happened in a potential fifth season.

10 The Lord in The Temple

One of the big reveals of Ultima Lucha Quatro was the introduction of a new villain: The Lord, as portrayed by the former Wade Barrett of WWE. Reportedly supposed to lead a group staging a takeover of the Lucha Underground Temple, fans were truly robbed of seeing Wade Barrett perform on Lucha Underground, even if he wasn't going to step in the ring.

After all, Barrett did some of his best work before leaving WWE by virtue of just standing on a scissor lift and trashing everything in sight.

9 A Real Title Reign for King Cuerno

While Lucha Underground featured a lot of great talent, one who got short shrift was King Cuerno, otherwise known as El Hijo del Fantasma. He is currently performing in NXT as Santos Escobar.

An underrated working on the show who only held the Gift of the Gods Championship for a week, the hunter-themed luchador always felt like the kind of villain heroes fight on their way to bigger things. Given how great Santos Escobar is now, it's a shame his run as Cuerno never hit those levels.

8 Pentagon Dark Chasing The Title

For Pentagon Jr. -- then known as Pentagon Dark -- Ultima Lucha Quatro ended on a down note, with Jake Strong (a.k.a. Jake Hager) cashing in his Gift of the Gods championship, Money in the Bank style, to steal the Lucha Underground Title out from under Penta. Season 5 would have definitely featured Pentagon chasing the belt.

Given that Pentagon became the protagonist of Lucha Underground, it was a shame that his story ended with betrayal and failure, and fans never got to see him go over in that context.

7 Famous B Getting Up To More Hijinx

A staple of the Southern California indie wrestling scene, Famous B got his big break performing for Lucha Underground, where he never won any titles, but found success as a manager with a low-rent Jimmy Hart shtick. Famous B brought a great used car salesman quality to his work as a manager, complete with cheesy commercials for his managing services.

He never showed up in the same capacity in any other major promotion, so fans can only wonder what Famous B would have gotten into in Season 5.

6 Chavo's Return

Chavo Guerrero Jr. was a bigger deal in the earlier seasons of Lucha Underground, but was booted from The Temple after his defeat in a Loser Leaves Lucha match against Rey Mysterio Jr. But Chavo made a surprise return in Ultima Lucha Quatro to save Shaul Guerrero from an attack, suggesting that he might make a return to The Temple.

Unfortunately, fans are left to wonder what a babyface Chavo in Lucha Underground would be like. Would he have to make amends with Blue Demon Jr.?

5 More Reklusa

The middle of Lucha Underground Season 4 introduced Chelsea Green as the spider-themed villainess Reklusa, but fans didn't get to see much of her as she lost a match to Pentagon and disappeared.

It's a different character from the usual Chelsea Green personas fans have seen in NXT and Impact, and a perfect fit for The Temple. It would have been great to see Green continue to play that role, terrorizing various luchadores with spiders.

4 Jake Strong's Reign of Terror

Brian Cage competed for one of Dario Cueto's signature "unique opportunities," which ended up being the Gauntlet of the Gods, a glove that allows the power of a god to possess its wearer. Cage ultimately resisted the power, and Black Lotus went on to use the Gauntlet to kill Matanza.

Lucha Underground ended with Jake Strong holding not only the Lucha Underground Championship but also the Gauntlet. With such power and prestige, Strong likely would have enjoyed a reign of terror in the Temple, not unlike Mil Muertes at the beginning of Season 2 -- and it's a shame it never happened.

3 The Return of El Mariachi Loco

One of the more fun introductions in Lucha Underground Season 1 was that of El Mariachi Loco, a masked luchador who (in kayfabe) was simply a performer at Dario Cueto's favorite restaurant who got an invitation to the Temple. It was a fun premise for a fun goofball character, but Loco disappeared from Lucha Underground, instead donning a different mask to play El Siniestro de la Muerte of The Disciples of Death.

But since the entire trio was done away with AND his other character of Saltador was sacrificed to Matanza, there's nothing stopping El Mariachi Loco from making a return to the Temple in Season 5. Maybe he would have been the key to saving the world.

2 Developing The New Characters

Season 4 introduced numerous new wrestlers to the Temple, including the aforementioned Jake Strong and then-lesser-known performers like Sammy Guevara, Dezmond Xavier (now NXT's Wes Lee), and XO Lishus (Sonny Kiss). Some of these new additions impressed more than others, but didn't get a ton of character development.

It's unfortunate that they never got the chance, considering how new-to-English-speaking-fan wrestlers like Pentagon and Drago were able to develop. A lot of them are doing just fine now, but it would have been great to see them become full-fledged characters on the show.

1 The Return of Dario Cueto

One of the best things to come out of Lucha Underground was LU proprietor Dario Cueto, played by actor Luis Fernandez-Gil, who proved to be one of the most entertaining manager/authority figure characters of all time. After his murder in Season 3, the following season saw Fernandez-Gil portray Dario's father Antonio Cueto as he took over ownership of The Temple from his son.

Dario was sorely missed, however, as Season 4 had a few too many changes that rendered the show unrecognizable. Ultima Lucha Quatro ended with the promise of Dario's return, and it's a shame fans never got that.
